Everything You Need to Know About Trainer Kites

What is a trainer kite?

Trainer kites are small, beginner friendly kites that teach you the basic mechanics of kite control using a control bar. In kiteboarding, control bars are how you control the tension on the lines which in turn control how the kite flys through the air.

If I want to learn how to kite board, do I need to fly a trainer kite first?

In short, no, it is not necessary to fly a trainer kite prior to a kiteboarding lesson. However, we highly recommend that you do so - the basic kite control skills that you can learn with a trainer kite will help you get more time on the water and more out of your lesson. The basic kite control fundamentals are the same between a four line 12 square meter kiteboarding kite and a two line two meter trainer kite.

Are trainer kites solely for those who are planning on learning to kite board?

No - these kites can be a lot of fun for anyone, even if they have no interest in kiteboarding. Trainer kites make a trip to the beach or just a windy day at a park a lot more exciting!

What should I look for in a trainer kite if I am brand new to kite flying?

Look for a small kite, between one and two square meters, that won't have too much power. In light winds, under 15mph or so, a small trainer kite will not provide too much pull as you dive the kite and power it up. Be mindful of who will be flying it as well - for younger kids it is recommended to start with them flying in very light winds, under 8mph or so. The Ozone Ignition and the Slingshot B2 are our favorite trainer kite recommendations for those who are new.
